Workshops - Class Outlines

The classes in our two day workshop are listed below. You can also click here to download a text copy.

Dress for classes: wear something comfortable, like a full skirt or loose pants and a choli or comfy top. Please bring zils. Knee pads are recommended for the floorwork class.

If you wish to take notes, please bring a pen and notebook. No audio or video recording devices will be permitted.

Classes will be held at Mayfields MCL Cafeteria 2100 S Liberty Dr., Bloomington, IN 47403, 812-323-1625.


Workshop Schedule for Tribal:Pura

Day 1 - Saturday, March 1

8:30 am Doors open for Registration

9:30 – 10:00 Belly Dance Aerobic Warm-Up
30 minutes - Taught by Carolena & Megha

Limber up and get your blood flowing with this fun and stimulating warm-up and stretch.

NOTE: Carolena is an American Council on Exercise Certified Personal Trainer

10:15 – 12:15 True Tribal Basics & Tribal Combinations
2 hours - Taught by Carolena & Megha

Using fun combinations, we'll breakdown several basic movements and their correct technique from the Tribal vocabulary. You'll walk away with mini-choreographies you can plug into your dance and effective setups for some of the faster moving steps and turns.

12:15 – 1:45 Lunch and Shopping
You will have time to get lunch and shop at our vendor tables.

1:45 – 3:45 Drills for Leading and Following
2 hours - Taught by Carolena & Megha

Communication is one of the subtle but very exciting aspects of Tribal Style dance. Using a series of simple but challenging drills, learn the concept of Leading and Following, Formations, Cues & Transitions and Music Interpretation.

NOTE: Dancers should know the basics of Taxeem, Bodywave, Hand Floreo & Arm Undulations, Shimmy, Arabic Basic, Egyptian Basic, Pivot Bumps and Choo-choos.

Day 2 - Sunday, March 2

8:30 am Doors open for Registration

9:30 – 10:00 Temple Dance Stretch
30 minutes - Taught by Carolena & Megha

Limber up and get your blood flowing with this fun and stimulating warm-up and stretch.

NOTE: Carolena is an American Council on Exercise Certified Personal Trainer

10:15 – 12:15 Improvisational Choreography
2 hours - Taught by Carolena & Megha

The steps: their variations in combinations, choreographies and improvisation. Musical interpretation, finger cymbals, refinement of technique. Partnering and group work with emphasis on communication between dancers.

NOTE: Dancers should know the basics of Taxeem, Bodywave, Hand Floreo & Arm Undulations, Shimmy, Arabic Basic, Egyptian Basic, Pivot Bumps and Choo-choos…. or be preceded by True Tribal Basics and Tribal Communications.

12:15 – 1:45 Lunch and Shopping
You will have time to get lunch and shop at our vendor tables.

1:45 – 2:45 The Trick to Spins and Turns
1 hour - Taught by Carolena & Megha

Communication is one of the subtle but very exciting aspects of Tribal Style dance. Using a series of simple but challenging drills, learn the concept of Leading and Following, Formations, Cues and Transitions and Music Interpretation.

NOTE: You will need to know and be able to execute the basic Steps: Taxeem, Bodywave, Hand Floreo & Arm Undulations, Shimmy, basic Arabic, basic Egyptian, Pivot Bump and Choo-choo. Bring: zils, a full skirt is recommended but not mandatory.

3:00 – 4:00 Zils!
1 hour - Taught by Carolena & Megha

Yes, you can play zils and dance at the same time! Learn the five basic Tribal Zil patterns (Basic RLR, Alternating RL, Military, Moroccan Six, Baladi) and apply them to your dance.

NOTE: Recommended but not mandatory: Dancers should know The basics of Taxeem, Arm Undulation, Bodywave, Hand Floreos, Shimmy, Arabic Basic, Egyptian Basic, Pivot Bumps and Choo-choos. Dancers without knowledge of the basic steps can drill finger cymbal patterns during the dance segment.

Vendors

The following vendors will at the workshops:

  • Audrena's has been adoring belly dancers for over 30 years. They have everything from music to swords, to harem pants to full costumes.
  • Magical Fashions has an extensive variety in bellydance costumes from saris, banjara cholis, skirts, salwaar-kameez, lehnga, cholis, jewelry, hand bags, home decor and other bellydance a ccessories.
  • Mythdemeanor creates clothing for the alternative aesthetic. Each item is hand crafted and unique.
  • The Red Camel specializes in jewelry and textiles from the Middle East, North Africa, India, and Central Asia.
